CampMed at UCR

CampMed at UCR is a student organization that was first established at the University of California Irvine and eventually branched off to the University of California Los Angeles. CampMed is a peer-mentoring program that exposes socio-economic disadvantaged youth to professions in the health field through a unique three day camp experience.
Meet the 2017-2018Â Coordinators:
Amanda David
Co-Director
Major: Cell, Molecular, & Developmental Biology
I started CampMed at UCR because I wanted to be a part of something that I knew I could be proud of and something that's bigger than ourselves. I wanted to give students an outlet that I wish I had when I was in high school. Being part of this organization, I learned so much about myself and have felt more motivated and determined to pursue my career goals. Also, I just want to say how appreciative I am for my coordinators! We have all created a friendship and bond that I will forever be grateful for!

Brittany Truong
Co-Director
Major: Biochemistry
I was actually a high school student that attended CampMed through UCI my junior year. I had such an enlightening experience and I had all the coordinators and counselors to thank for that. From then on, I dreamed to be apart of CampMed in college. When I found out I was getting the opportunity to help start the organization at UCR, I was overjoyed. Now I have the chance to be on the other side to inspire high school students who are eager to learn more about higher education and the medical school application process.

I'm a 5th year CMDB major pursing a career in medicine. Apart from school I like to sing, dabble with instruments, shoot arrows at an archery range, and watch a superhero flick from time to time. Being a part of CampMed has allowed me to build leadership skills, create friendships, and help lead the younger generation to the right path. When I was younger, I never had a mentor to help guide me on the life beyond high school and I'm glad to be a board member and make a difference in someone else's future.

I had experienced the shortages of materials in regard to education in the city of Riverside since I went to high school in Riverside. In college, I want to utilize my resources and skills to help high school students in underserved communities. CampMed gives me the opportunity to help high school students to pursue higher education and career in the medical field.

I strongly believe that CampMed is a life changing experience for high school students. I want to give students confidence in their ability to pursue a higher education. If we can make an impact in at least one student's educational experience, my heart will be happy.

I joined CampMed because I wanted to be part of an organization that helps guide and motivate aspiring high school students on their path to pre-health/pre-med careers. Being part of this team allows me to make a positive contribution another students’ future and career.

As an aspiring physician, I've been fortunate enough to be able to witness and experience all the different aspects of medicine throughout high school and college. However, I also understand the huge health care disparities in the Inland Empire. I joined CampMed in hopes of inspiring high school students not only for higher education, but also to open the door to the medical world to those that may not have the same opportunities.

Being an attendee of CampMed, I always knew I wanted to be part of this great organization that has exposed me to so many great opportunities. CampMed has given me a great board who works so very hard to uphold our mission statement and I couldn't ask for more. Being a freshman and holding a director position has been overwhelming but it's all worth it to see CampMed strive and make its mark at UCR.
